Traumatic brain injury is one of the most common accident-related injuries in America, affecting some 1.7 million people each year. Many will ultimately recover from their injuries, but others will have persistent or long-term complications, including cognitive issues. Scientists now believe that an ADHD medication may help. Learn more about this treatment, and discover what you can do if a brain injury has happened to you or a loved one, with help from the following.
Using ADHD Medication to Treat Brain Injuries
Long-term traumatic brain injury (TBI) can impair a person’s cognitive abilities, sometimes so severely that the victim requires round-the-clock care. However, even victims with a minor impairment may experience a diminished quality of life. A study from the Indiana University School of Medicine suggests that Ritalin, a common ADHD medication, may improve certain areas of cognition for these victims. More specifically, the researchers noted an improvement in attention span, memory, and executive functioning. However, it should be noted that the results of the study are still preliminary, which means it is not yet available for suffering victims.
Another factor to consider is that the medication was paired with Memory and Attention Adaptation Training, which may have also had an impact on the overall improvement of the study participants. It is also possible that the drug may not work as efficiently without the memory training treatment. Still, the evidence is encouraging for victims and their families.
When TBI is Caused by Negligence
Although traumatic brain injury can occur under almost any circumstance, many are the result of negligence. A few examples include work injuries, car accidents, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents. If any one of these incidents caused the injury of you or a loved one, you might be entitled to compensation. Unfortunately, the process can be challenging and complex, and victims are often disadvantaged when it comes to fighting against the insurance companies. For this reason, it is highly recommended that victims obtain legal assistance.
