Statistics indicate that some 2.8 million Americans experience a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Capable of causing everything from death and memory loss to unexplained mood and personality changes, it may be more common in those with bipolar disorder. Learn more about this risk, and discover how a seasoned traumatic brain injury lawyer may be able to help you receive compensation for an accident-related brain injury, even if you do have an overall increased risk.
Study Finds Bipolar Disorder May Increase Risk of TBI
Statistics indicate that some 5.7 million American adults suffer from bipolar disorder. Formally known as manic depression, bipolar disorder causes mood shifts, and it can interfere with an individual’s ability to function in their day-to-day life. Individuals who suffer from the condition may also be more prone to experiencing traumatic brain injury during an accident.
Using information from the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database of Taiwan, researchers examined the rate of TBI incidence in two separate groups from 1998 to 2010: a control group and a group of individuals who had formerly received a bipolar diagnosis. Researchers found an incidence rate of 5.9 percent among patients with bipolar disorder, which was significantly higher than the rate of 3.2 percent in the control group. Age and the use of medication – particularly antidepressants, mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, and benzodiazepines – were found to be modifying factors, and the risk of TBI was greatest within the first two years of inpatient treatment. A history of recurrent hospitalizations also increased the overall risk of a TBI among individuals with bi-polar.
It is unclear whether individuals with bipolar have a greater risk of experiencing a TBI because they are more prone to situations that may cause such an injury (i.e. auto accidents, falls, etc.) or they are simply more at risk of experiencing a TBI after experiencing such an event. Regardless, victims who suffer a fault-related TBI injury may be owed compensation – especially if it has hindered their ability to work, go to school, or care for their family. Unfortunately, obtaining full and fair compensation for such incidents and injuries can be difficult for victims. A seasoned personal injury attorney can help by ensuring the victim’s rights and best interests are protected.
